Maker Field Day with NextFab Studio and the Franklin Institute
Wednesday, April 20, 2011 from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM (EDT)
It'll be like the field days we grew up with, but instead of playing
tug-of-war against those pesky 5th-graders, you'll be competing against
your peers in events as varied as speed soldering, BristleBot racing,
the Foamwood Derby and paper-tower building. The event, part of the inaugural Philadelphia Science Festival, will also feature
an appearance by Dean Kamen, entrepreneur and inventor of the Segway,
and the recipient of the 2011 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Mechanical
To be held in the Franklin Institute's Harcourt Education Center, participants will have the opportunity to participate in any or all of the four events offered. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day for event session winners, and there will also be a final award ceremony at 4:30 p.m. to recognize the overall winner of each event.
Pre-registration is open to everyone, both participants and those interested in just watching the competition. The $5 entrance fee also includes admission to the Franklin Institute on Wednesday, April 20. Once pre-registration is sold out, those interested will be able to visit the Franklin Institute the day of the event for walk-in participation.
